✦ JOURNEY

The Great Wall was not built to be a tourist attraction. It was built to keep people out. But today, you will walk its stones and feel the weight of history with every step. Mutianyu is not the most crowded section, which is precisely why you are there. You will take the cable car up, and you will walk the ramparts for hours, the wind carrying the sound of distant bells. The pandas of Chengdu are not warriors—they are ambassadors of peace. And as you watch them tumble and chew bamboo in the quiet of the morning, you will feel a sense of calm settle over you, a reminder that even in a land of emperors and armies, there is room for gentleness.

"He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man."

 — Chinese Proverb —

A famous Chinese proverb that underscores the cultural and historical significance of the Great Wall, a highlight of this itinerary.

  ✦  LOCAL SECRET

The Great Wall at Mutianyu is spectacular, but the secret is the watchtower at the far end. Most tourists turn back after the first three towers. Keep walking — the fourth tower is where the locals go to watch the sunset, and it's entirely empty.

Did you know that the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu was built in the 6th century and is one of the best-preserved sections of the wall, with over 20 watchtowers spread across 2.5 kilometers? The wall is constructed from granite and limestone, with the "golden route" between the watchtowers offering the most scenic walking path.
