✦ JOURNEY

The Chao Phraya River does not announce itself. It just appears, brown and slow, moving through the city like an artery. You will take a longtail boat into its tributaries, the noise of Bangkok fading behind you. The Flower Market comes alive at dusk, the orchids piled high, the air thick with jasmine and the chatter of vendors. Wat Arun rises from the opposite bank, its spires catching the dying light. This is not the Bangkok of guidebooks—it is the Bangkok that belongs to those who know where to look. And as the boat glides back toward the city, the lights flickering on along the riverbanks, you will understand that you have found something rare: a moment of stillness in a city that never stops moving.

Stay with that stillness for a breath longer, and you’ll feel the river carrying stories older than the skyline around you. By the time you step back onto the pier, the night settling over Bangkok like a velvet curtain, you’ll realise the city has shown you one of its quietest, most intimate truths.

"The river is the soul of the city."

  ✦  LOCAL SECRET

The best view of Wat Arun isn't from the temple itself. It's from the rooftop of the antique shop across the river. The owner lets you up for 50 baht and a smile — and the sunset view is the most photographed in Bangkok, but only locals know about it.

Did you know that Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is named after the Hindu god Aruna, who is the personification of the rising sun? The temple's iconic spire is covered in porcelain and glass, creating a dazzling effect when illuminated by the sun.
