✦ JOURNEY

The morning begins not with a plan, but with a sound. You will wake to a chorus of birds that seems to come from everywhere at once—a living orchestra with no conductor. The lodge records 131 species, and you will be lucky to see half. But the ones you do see will stay with you: the metallic flash of a kingfisher, the shy shuffle of a pheasant, the call of a bird whose name you will never learn.

Batukaru Reserve is a sanctuary, not just for the birds, but for the human soul. And as the mist lifts from the canopy, revealing the deep green of the jungle and the distant silhouette of Mount Batukaru, you will understand that some places are not meant to be conquered—they are meant to be witnessed. In that quiet unveiling, when the forest exhales and the world feels newly washed, you’ll sense a kind of ancient patience in the air, as if the land has been waiting centuries for you to arrive.

Walk slowly here. The jungle rewards those who linger: a rustle in the undergrowth, a sudden burst of colour, a moment of stillness so complete it feels like a blessing. And as the morning light filters through the leaves in soft, golden ribbons, you’ll realise that Batukaru doesn’t simply show you nature—it teaches you how to listen to it.

"The birds are the soul of the forest."

A quote that captures the essence of Bali Birdwatching, where the songs of the jungle bring the rainforest to life.

  ✦  LOCAL SECRET

The best birdwatching spot in Batukaru isn't on the main trail. It's the abandoned coffee plantation at the end of the ridge road. The birds gather there at dawn to feed on the wild berries — and no one else goes there.

Did you know that Batukaru Reserve is home to the giant kupu kupu barong moth, one of the largest moths in the world with a wingspan of up to 30 centimeters? The lodge in the reserve has recorded 131 bird species, making it a recognized hotspot on eBird.
