Located on the western edge of the archipelago near the Galapagos hotspot, Isabela Island is the largest island of the Galapagos and was formed by the merging of 6 volcanoes.
600 hundred miles off the coast of Ecuador lies one of the most pristine and untouched archipelago in the world: the Galapagos Islands. Home to a myriad of unique creatures, this group of 19 islands and over 40 islets is so isolated that many of its birds and animals species cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
About 6 million years ago, those islands emerged from the depth of the ocean, following underwater volcano eruptions. It is only 2 million years later that the first species arrived on their shores, but only few of them managed to survive the unfamiliar environment and reproduce successfully, before slowly evolving over thousands of years. These islands are the inspiration to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, but most importantly they open a window to the past to allow their visitors to experience a unique journey back in time and understand the complexity of evolution of their inhabitants.
